After Tori had read through the day’s schedule, she wasn’t sure what to do with herself. Even though most of the employees of the Kent Company were staying at Hollaway, they’d been given the entire day off. She didn’t have any firm plans until that evening, when they would have a dinner and fireside.

She gazed out the window at the heavy fog that had settled over the castle grounds. A snowflake passed in front of the glass, quickly followed by a dozen more. Soon the entire landscape was swirling with white. Tori watched the snow gather in the cracks of the cobblestone courtyard, forming an intricate white lace. The castle looked even grander with its new snowy veil. She lifted her coat from its hanger and the old boots from the closet, and clomped out the door.

John didn’t show himself, and she doubted he thought her silly enough to run outside in a snowstorm. But to her, it wasn’t silly at all—it was invigorating. Besides, she reasoned, I’m not even leaving the castle grounds.

Once outside, she breathed in the icy air and felt it wake her thoughts, making them as crystal clear as the frozen fountain in the center of the courtyard. But the snow hadn’t chased away a few of the vendors still scattered about, and Tori wandered into the closest tent.

A variety of wallets and bags were displayed and stacked on tables, with two large heat lamps making it as warm as a summer day. Admiring the colors, Tori’s hand trailed across the bags as she made her way to the next tent. There were a few people already seated around a sort of makeshift, mobile café, and although the fire-grilled hamburgers smelled delicious, Tori headed for the next tent.

Glancing back just as she left, she saw the two men who were seated had stood. They both looked steadily at Tori. One of them she recognized as the man from the night before. After they made eye contact, they both became suddenly busy pushing their chairs in just right.

Tori rushed through the door and into the last tent. It was filled with homemade jewelry, and a half dozen women chatted and shopped. Their voices were a comfort for the mild shock Tori felt. Her mind was racing trying to figure out what had just happened, but it wasn’t making sense. They were at a company summit, not an alley bar somewhere downtown. If those men were looking at her, maybe she should just be flattered!

But the tight feeling in her stomach persisted, even as she tried to argue it away. Their eyes had seemed too serious, like something dark was hidden inside.

“Ms. Randall-Cullens, what an honor,” A young brunette gushed, with hand curled bracelets decorating her wrists and piled halfway up her forearms. “If you see anything you like, I might just die!”

Tori smiled, but she suddenly wanted to be back in her suite. Scanning the display in front of her, she picked up a dolphin quickly, and a trail of beads came with it.
